Success Secrets of Mark Zuckerberg (Part-09)

Awards and Accolades

Unusually for a billionaire, Zuckerberg hasn't actively courted awards and accolades. He is satisfied with running his company the way he wants to and generating vast sums of money from doing so.

But awards have come his way: his achievements are so remarkable that they cannot be ignored. In 2010, he was named 'Person of the Year' by Time magazine, and The Jerusalem Post followed up with a similar accolade the following year, declaring him as one of the 'Most Influential Jews'. In 2016, Zuckerberg was nominated as CEO of the Year at the 9th Annual Crunchies Award, TechCrunch's recognition of the leaders in the tech field, and won the award in spite of stiff competition from Tim Cook (Apple), Jack Dorsey (Twitter/Square), Susan Wojcicki (YouTube), and Elon Musk (Tesla).

You will only be considered truly successful if you are recognised outside your specific sector, and gain general acclaim.

For a self-proclaimed geek like Zuckerberg, one of his proudest moments is likely to be his cameo appearance on The Simpsons. In the "Loan-A-Lisa" episode, Lisa takes Nelson to a start-up event to meet successful founders, in the hope that they will inspire him to stay on in education rather than drop out to run his business. Unfortunately for Lisa, the founders they meet are Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Richard Branson, none of whom completed their degrees. The episode aired in October 2010, two days after the release of The Social Network, and it was watched by an estimated 8.63 million households in the US. Critics agreed it was generally entertaining, though by no means the most hilarious, or insightful, of The Simpsons' episodes.
