India is the largest Market for Mobile gaming in terms of downloads
India has become the largest mar- ket for mobile gaming for Epic Ga- mes in just five years, with nearly 15 billion games being downloaded every year and more than two bil- lion monthly active users on all ga- mes, said Quentin Staes-Polet, ma- naging director of Unreal Engine's international operations at Epic Games.
"Today, over 50% of the gaming market worldwide is on mobile. In- dia is the largest market for mobile gaming in terms of downloads, with 15 billion downloads a year and over two billion cumulative monthly acti- ve users on all the titles that are be ing played. These are absolutely staggering numbers in a space of fi- ve years," Staes-Polet told ET.
E-sports are "booming in India" due to the prevalence of mobile phones and low-price mobile inter- net connections, he said.
The transition of gaming from bigger screens of gaming consoles and televisions to mobile phones coincides with the growth of mobi- le phones and the arrival of App- le's iPhones, Staes-Polet said, ad- ding that in the future, almost all of the games will have to be released for mobile screens as well.
As technology progresses, the 30- year-old company, which has 50 offi- ces globally and employs close to 4,000 people, will come out with ga- mes that offer a more immersive ex- perience to the players. These ga- mes will be built largely using the gaming engines being developed by the company, said Staes-Polet.
The technological prowess of Un- real Engine has also been harnes- sed by creators, designers, architects and movie makers who have started adopting them for their own industries, he said.
"So, now we have broad adoption, from architecture to film. We have some of the latest films here in Bol- lywood that have used this (Unreal Engine) technology," said the com- pany's managing director.
