It hasn't been the best of times at Big tech companies in the last few months. Since November, companies like Meta (twice), Google, Microsoft, Amazon (twice), Intel and Twitter among others have laid off thousands of employees. A multitude of reasons has been cited by them for laying off people, which include the global macroeconomics conditions, stalled growth and over hiring. Here are some of the biggest layoffs by tech companies in recent months:
Meta
21,000 employees laid off (over two rounds)
Where: Across teams and regions.
Why: Stagnant user growth, pivot to Metaverse hasn't gone to plan.
Amazon
27,000 employees laid off (over two rounds).
Where: Alexa teams, AWS, Twitch.
Why: "Shaky economy", reducing additional costs, devices not growing as expected.
Microsoft
11,000 employees laid off.
Where: Gaming division, mixed-reality teams.
Where: Cost cutting, bet on AR/VR didn't pay off.
HP
6,000 jobs
Where: Across teams
Why: Low PC demand from commercial and personal segment, cost cutting.
More than 5,000 jobs.
Where: Across teams and regions.
Why: Because of Elon Musk! Wanted a leaner team adhering to "strict" work terms and cost cutting.
